Quantitative Health Researcher
The Center for Studying Health System Change (HSC) is currently recruiting an experienced quantitative researcher with a background in economics or other social sciences to help conduct timely, objective and high-quality health policy research and analysis. In addition, the researcher will actively participate in the development of a vibrant research agenda, help develop funding opportunities, and communicate research results to policy makers, private sector decision makers and others.
Major Responsibilities
- Designs and conducts research and analysis that encompass a number of topics impacting health policy in one or more of the following areas: health insurance coverage, access to care, health care costs, consumer behavior, provider payment, competition in health care markets, and patient experiences with the health care system.
- Writes journal articles and other HSC publications based on research findings and policy analysis.
- Participates in outreach and dissemination activities related to research and represents HSC at professional meetings and other venues.
- Helps identify and solicit funding opportunities, including helping write proposals for new projects.
- Manages projects, including tracking financial progress and preparing monthly reports.
- Collaborates closely with HSC colleagues.
Qualifications
- Ph.D. with a social science background in health services research, including public health, economics, sociology, public policy or other relevant discipline with at least two years of relevant experience. (Master's Degree in one of the noted disciplines with a minimum of five years of relevant experience also will be considered.)
- Demonstrated ability to identify key health policy issues and design and conduct independent research projects in one or more of the following areas: health insurance coverage; access to care; health care costs; the health care safety net; consumer decision-making in health care; consumer engagement; patient satisfaction and perceptions of quality of care.
- Ability to obtain funding for research, either independently or as part of a team of researchers.
- Strong analytic and quantitative research skills, particularly in analyzing data from health insurance claims, large complex health surveys of households and/or physicians.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills; experience writing for a policy audience a plus.
- Excellent organizational skills with demonstrated ability to work efficiently, accurately and independently.
- Ability to work well in a collaborative environment that emphasizes quality, rigor and critical thinking.
Located in Washington, D.C., HSC has a current staff of 22, including researchers in the fields of economics, sociology, medicine, political science and health services research. We focus on objective, timely, and policy-relevant research and emphasize aggressive dissemination to policymakers and other stakeholders. HSC currently receives major funding from the National Institute for Health Care Reform to conduct analyses on health care costs, and payment and delivery system reforms from the perspective of private purchasers. Other funding sources include major health care foundations and agencies in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. HSC is a sister organization to Mathematica Policy Research, a leader in evaluating the effectiveness of local, state and federal health, human services and educational programs.
