HCS is sponsoring a timely conference titled, "Specialty Hospitals: Focused
Factories or Cream Skimmers?" The conference will examine the recent growth
in the construction of specialty facilities focused on specific surgical procedures.
HSC will release a new report examining the reasons behind this building boom
and its implications for costs, quality and access to care.
The U.S. has a long tradition of some types of specialty hospitals (e.g., children's,
rehabilitation, and eye and ear), but specialty hospitals focusing on cardiovascular
and orthopedic procedures are relatively new and rapidly increasing in number.
